In 2013, Rebuilding Together DC will complete its 30th year of helping low income and elderly families in making home repairs. Last year, on the last two Saturdays in April, St. Columba’s parishioners assisted two families in Ward 4. In one house, much of the work was centered around making the home safer (handrails and new lights) as well as repairing walls and ceilings that had been damaged by a leaking roof (also repaired through Rebuilding Together). In the second house, a multitude of issues were tackled, including plumbing, painting and door repair as well as the installation of a solar energy system to reduce the electrical costs of the homeowner. Our efforts allowed the families to stay safely and warmly in their homes.
Rebuilding Together, then known as Christmas in April, was founded by a St. Columba’s parishioner in 1984. It is a ministry that has been able to help more than 50 families in our community. The dates for Rebuilding Together 2013 are Sat., April 20 and 27.
St. Columba’s is grateful for the generous support of the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless program for enabling this work.
