Advent and Christmas with the Family Ministry
As we move into Advent, we offer you activities and opportunities to engage the whole family in a meaningful, fun way, to guide you through Advent, towards the true joy of Christmas, and then into Epiphany.
Advent is a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus. We do that through worship and Sunday School at church. There are also many ways to prepare at home with your family. This short brochure provides you with background about Advent, prayers to say when lighting your Advent Wreath, and a schedule of the many activities at St. Columba's.
Advent Calendars
An Advent calendar is an intentional way to mark the time we spend waiting to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Below is a list of several types of calendars you can try. Click the link near each suggestion below for more information or the materials you need to use that particular calendar.
- Mary on the Mantel - Mary will move around the church building each day of Advent offering a suggested act of kindness for you to do. Listen to her story here and then follow her on St. Columba's Instagram to find each day's suggested act of kindness. Will you recognize where she is each day?
- Reverse Advent Calendar - collect a non-perishable food item in a box at home each day. On Sunday bring it to church to share with the Samaritan Ministry food collection in the back of the church or in the Great Hall or save it during Advent and take it to your favorite food pantry after Christmas. - Outdoor Advent Calendar - Offers 29 days of easy outdoor activities. It’s not religious, but doing one of these each day of Advent will help your family have a few moments of Sabbath each day together. Check it out here.
- Pray in Color Advent Calendar - Do you like to doodle and color? This Advent calendar offers you a space each day to reflect on the season.
- Advent Word - this calendar offers you a word each day of Advent, your family can talk about it’s meaning and how it relates to your journey through Advent. To see all the words chosen for this Advent season or to sign up to receive the word daily by email, click here.
