Columbarium Guild Volunteer Opportunity
St. Columba’s has an Altar Guild and a Flower Guild. Each provides an important service to the church to make our services and the Nave special. It is time for us to establish a Columbarium Guild to do for the Columbarium what the other two Guilds do within the church.
The Columbarium at our church is a beautiful resting place for deceased parishioners. The secluded, garden-like setting provides families and friends a tranquil atmosphere in which to inter loved ones. While major maintenance and/or renovation projects are done by contract services, there is a need to do regular cleanup/sprucing work to keep the space in excellent condition.
This presents families and individuals an opportunity to support the parish in a meaningful and tangible, yet convenient, way by donating small amounts of their time to provide beautification services. What’s involved is leaf raking, simple gardening, sweeping, watering plants, removing old flower arrangements, and general sprucing up. Done on a regular bi-weekly basis, the work would not represent a significant amount of time for a volunteer crew. However, the difference it would make would be noticeable and satisfying for those doing it and those visiting.
The plan is to create this Guild through volunteers and set up a calendar of dates when the work would be done (estimated to be a few hours every two weeks but, with experience, may be less frequently). Additional dates to do sprucing up just prior to funerals would be added, as needed. Members would sign up to serve for a year and then would select the dates on which they would serve (with always the opportunity to ask to trade dates with other members when conflicts occur). This would be a great activity for teams of parishioners (including Youth Group members), families and those with loved ones interred in the site. Serving only about one time every 3 months is anticipated with a reasonable number of people signing up.
Final landscaping work is about to be completed. We are now asking Individuals and families to sign up to participate. We will hold an informational tour of the site so those potentially interested could better understand what is involved and ask any questions.
