Housing Up builds thriving communities in Washington, DC by developing affordable housing and offering comprehensive support services to homeless and low-income families. They believe that people who have safe, affordable housing and genuine opportunities are empowered to transform their lives. St. Columba’s has had the privilege of supporting Housing Up in their efforts as a way to support our neighbors, especially those who have been hit harder than some by the effects of the pandemic on our community.
According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), nearly 1 in 5 renters, disproportionately Black and Latino, are behind in their rent, with the potential of 30-40 million people losing their homes. In addition, more than 135,000 Pepco customers are behind in their utility bill, just as we are getting into cold-weather seasons. Finally, food insecurity in the district has risen dramatically in the District as a result of the pandemic. The Capital Area Food Bank estimates that the pandemic has pushed more than 250,000 people into hunger in D.C., and Feeding America estimates that 28.6% of children in the District are experiencing food insecurities.
Join St. Columba’s in helping to provide rental, utility and food security for our neighbors by contributing to the Housing Up Security Fund. One-hundred percent of all proceeds will go to feeding families with food assistance, keeping families warm during these Winter months with utility assistance, and keep them together and safe in their homes by helping with rent assistance.
