Safe Church
The Safeguarding God’s Children program has been updated at the request of General Convention. The new program, Safe Church, Safe Communities (“Safe Church”), is entirely online and is accessed through Presidium Academy. Safe Church focuses on safe and healthy ways of being in a ministerial relationship, and its modules address healthy boundaries and power dynamics. In addition to clergy, staff, and people ministering with children and youth, all persons in leadership roles are encouraged to complete some of the modules.
A list of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington’s required courses for clergy and paid staff, children/youth workers and volunteers, facility key holders, lay leaders making residential or hospital visits, and Vestry members is attached. All required training modules should be completed within three months of beginning a ministry role.
After reviewing the list of required courses, ministry leaders should work with their staff liaison to compile a list of names and email addresses of people involved with their ministry by role (“learners”). When the list is complete, the staff liaison should forward the list to the Director of Finance and Administration (“DFA”). The DFA will work with the Project Coordinator to send email invitations from Presidium Academy to all learners. As learners complete their course requirements, the DFA and Project Coordinator will update the learners’ Realm profiles by uploading a transcript of completed courses and listing the completion date.
When we take the Safe Church training, we commit to caring for one another, to loving our neighbor as ourselves, and to following Jesus and promoting right relationship.
