The Labyrinth at St. Columba's
St. Columba's Labyrinth Ministry offers the sacred path of the labyrinth to all people, regardless of faith, age, or ability, as a peaceful space for prayer, reflection, and renewal.
Are you seeking time for quiet inner reflection? Come walk St. Columba’s indoor and outdoor labyrinths.
Labyrinths are an ancient form of walking meditation and flowered in medieval times with the building of the great gothic cathedrals in Europe. In fact, both of St. C’s labyrinths are replicas of the famous “Chartres Labyrinth” built more than 800 years ago at Chartres Cathedral in France.
According to Veriditas, an organization that promotes labyrinths worldwide, labyrinths are used to “quiet the mind, recover balance in life, and encourage meditation, insight, self-reflection, stress reduction, and to discover innovation and celebration. They are open to people as an interfaith, cross-cultural blueprint for well-being. The practice of labyrinth walking integrates the body with the mind & mind with the spirit.”
St. Columba’s outdoor labyrinth–at the corner of 42nd and Albemarle–is available 24/7, with signage on how to walk a labyrinth. Any and all are welcome, including those with furry friends. The outdoor labyrinth is wheelchair accessible from 42nd St.
Our indoor labyrinth is offered throughout the year and upon request for other St. Columba’s ministries or groups. When our canvas labyrinth (measuring 36 feet across) is unfolded and in place–and lit only by battery-operated candles and a bit of natural light through the window–the Great Hall is transformed into a magical place. Live music quietly enhances the experience, and volunteer guides are available with information and answers to questions. No experience necessary.
Indoor labyrinth walks in the church’s Great Hall are open to all ages and abilities on:
- Art All Night: Saturday, September 28, 2024 7:00pm-9:00pm
- Advent: Tuesday December 3, 2024, 7:00-8:30 pm

St. C’s Labyrinth Ministry was launched in February 2015. The team of labyrinth guides meets six times a year to continue to unfold this rich spiritual ministry for the community. We offer a very simple training for first time volunteers. Newcomers are welcome; come join us!
